The story of Merlin Cycles
Merlin Cycles was founded in 1993 by John Moss and is one of the UK's most established bicycle retailers. What began as a mail-order business operating out of his guest room has developed over the years into an internationally recognized supplier of high-quality bicycles, components, and clothing.
From the beginning to the present day
Just a few months after its founding, Merlin Cycles opened its first shop in Ormskirk, Lancashire. In 1998, the company moved to larger premises in Leyland, where Merlin Cycles continued to develop and also produced its first own bicycles.
These included the well-known Rock Lobster steel hardtails and later the Malt aluminum hardtails. Initially, the focus was on mountain bikes, but later the product range was consistently expanded to include road bikes.
Reliability as a principle
A central tenet of Merlin Cycles' philosophy is transparency. Products shown as available are actually in stock. This reliability has significantly contributed to the brand's excellent reputation.
Today, Merlin Cycles stands for a strong product selection, high quality, technical expertise and a service that customers can rely on.
Merlin Cycles in Germany
Since 2023, Merlin Cycles has had its own location in Germany, managing trade within the EU from there. With the expansion of the hibike brand, the Kronberg location was restructured.
The brand hibike
Hibike Bär KG was a well-established name in the German bicycle market for many years. Following its insolvency at the end of 2024, the hibike brand was acquired by Merlin Cycles on March 1, 2025.
This allowed the brand to be preserved while simultaneously being transformed into a new, clearly focused concept that is more strongly oriented towards high-quality product ranges, technical quality and sound advice.
Our focus areas
Today, the focus is on road bikes, gravel bikes, mountain bikes, and e-mountain bikes. The range is complemented by high-quality components and selected clothing in the brick-and-mortar store.
